Rhythm

Isn't it funny how you find yourself in a pattern...
doing the same things, day after day.

Sometimes it can become monotonous.
Droning on and on...
with out good reason.

Then, there are times when it becomes a rhythm.
Perfectly matched to the tune in your daily lives.

I think these things... the ones almost like music...
are the ones that become traditions or pleasant memories.

The little things that carry you through the weeks...
into the years and make it to "I remember when we used to..." statements.

Before bed walks have become a new routine...
one with rhythm.

During the extra special time at night...
where toddlers and parents are tired,
but not yet ready to call it a day.

To soak up some extra minutes of togetherness.
Without crying and screaming monster on the edge..
or big adult sighs and clock watching.

We go outside.
It calms the grumpy monster
and reminds the adults what is good.

We parade up and down the street...
saying hello, waving and pointing at dogs.

Greeting neighbors, watching birds
visiting other people porches and driveways.

Some of us like our walks better...
with only one shoe - refusing to put the second back on.
scraped knees and shins - from practicing our stair climbing
dirty hands from digging in the neighbors mulch
and of course...
a stick.

Okay, just one of us.

It's amazing what a walk in the evening can do for a toddler. You are absolutely right: if we're inside, we watch the clock and pray there isn't a meltdown. Oh, and love the pictures!

Of course she carries a stick and only wears one sandal, it just isn't the same without it.
