stuffed

IMG_7563.JPG
Helena brought another first parenting moment upon us... having something stuck in a body orifice.  It is amazing we made it to the third kiddo before it happened, really.

It was really way up there - it looked like she had a growth near the bridge of her nose and at first I had no idea what it was.  How she managed to get it up that far, I can't even tell you - her fingers aren't that long.

I managed to get it out with Michael's direction.  A little mouth-to-mouth puffs of air while holding the other nostril shut - it popped right out.  A little black button.  As you can imagine, holding her down and making that happen was not the easiest or quietest thing in the world.  Little lady was furious, but really happy to see her shiny button again.  She was just as furious when I made it disappear into the trash.

Giraffe, Chester, Ellie and Cow... the lovies.
Children so tired from playing all day that they go to bed an hour early, no complaints and almost begging to go.  Children that forget all, not just one, but all of their favorite stuffed animals at bedtime.   We are the winners tonight.

Burdens

sleepy baby

There are moments...
when being a parent, being a mom
feels like a burden.

You are tired, hungry, and dirty.
Your brain is functioning at a level unsafe to walk up and down stairs...
let alone make sure other living creatures survive and thrive.

You find your self in a deeply heated argument at lunch time.
Fists clenched and jaw tight...
all over a preschooler wearing pants.

And you are in the same get-up from the day before.

Last night you were up pleading.
Quietly begging a little two-toothed monster for mercy.
For sleep.
Just one more hour, before his sister wakes up.

Fifty minutes later, his eyelids fall.

Tonight, both kids are sleeping and you realize we are almost out of milk.
Without milk there will be no apple oh's for breakfast...
or chocolate milk to bribe sister's silence as you rock the fussy teething baby to nap.

Before leaving to make a grocery run...
you scratch some unnamed, dried, crusty spot from the leg of the afore mention getup.
Check your face in the mirror and seeing the circles, find your biggest sunnies and head out...
in the pouring rain.

It is too dark to see with them on, so they stay in the car.
As you grab essentials and a family sized bag of chips... just for you...
you run into 2 people you know and try to catch up with quickly...
all the while thinking how cute their eyeshadow and high heels look.

Once home and sitting with your chips, searching for the remote...
you see a huge white crusty pile dried to your shoulder.
The shoulder of a very black shirt.

Nice.

Finding the remote, you hear a fuss and half cry.
The teether will need soothing, but you guess you have a few minutes.
Before those minutes pass, the preschooler is screaming.

When you give in and go in her room, she says...
Hi mommy.  Are you napping?  I love you.

After laying down the bedtime law...
while thinking how much you love the little terrorist.
You are eventually back with your unopened chips...

and the teether cries... loud.

So you rock and rock.
Come to your senses and medicate...
and rock some more.

You get a sigh and deep breath.
Complete and utter relaxation and trust.
Deeply asleep and heavy in your arms.

And that weight...
the heavy, droopy weight of a sleeping baby...

the toddler declarations of love...
when it is way past bedtime.

They aren't really burdens.
They are quite possibly the lightest loads you could ever carry.

Screaming

EB pointing web.jpg

Eva is screaming in her bed right now.
Not crying - just amazingly loud, high pitched screeching.
I don't want to nappy!!

Nap time has been really hard lately.
A battle of wills, and it is wearing me out.
I have even thought about just skipping it.

Over the weekend we did on accident.
Visiting family - out and about during nap time.
The hysterical fit throwing that occurred was a huge reality check.
She needs her nap.

Not only is she fighting sleep...
she can now get in and out of her crib with the ease of a seasoned fence jumper.

It is really time for the big girl bed.
We have been holding on to the crib for dear life.
A big girl bed will be here soon.

Good news:
She has slept the last 3 nights training pants free!

We have been rocking big girl undies at nap time the last week or so
But not at night.
Going to bed without them wasn't our idea.

Eva decided she didn't like them anymore.
She fought us putting them on.
We persisted and so...
she just took it off.

The reality:
Our monster is growing up really fast...
and dragging us along with her kicking and screaming.

Feeling an inch tall

The weeks of crying.
Nights of waking up over and over.

Mommy, please, I need you.
Hold you mommy.

All of it was solved with this...
a purple heart nightlight.
The last three nights we have all slept like babies...

It wasn't a toddler trying to drive us crazy.
It was just a monster afraid of the dark.

Still

This toy has always been one of her very favorites.
It was the "stay sane on a long car ride toy" at one point.
Then it got ignored.

A few months ago, I started rotating Eva's toys.
I put a ton of her toys away - out of sight and out of mind.

I separated her toys into similar things.
Big toys, toys that sing, stuffed toys, puzzles, blocks - all in separate piles.

Then I put about 2/3rds of each pile away.
Only one or two things from each pile stayed - the rest were hidden away.

I was hard core.
Some of her very favorites went into the closet.

It has worked great.
When I see she is getting bored with toys - about once every week or so...
I swap out her toys.

On this day I swapped...
she sat still for 30 minutes playing with her once favorite toy.

The entire kitchen was cleaned and dinner finished.
Have you tried rotating toys?
