A Friend

This is Rayma.
We got to have lunch yesterday.
The monster loves her.

Her husband was my boss.
He called her his better whole...
because he would be nothing with out her.

Working together for all those years...
I got to know my boss really well.
I knew his family.

Rayma quickly became my friend.
their family became my family.

I never liked being friends with people I worked with...
it sometimes got in the way.
I couldn't help myself with her.

She became a big sister.
Older, wiser than me.
Mom to teenagers.

She taught me to sew.
When she came to meet Eva for the first time...
she brought 2 dinners and rolls of quarters.

Then she used some quarters to wash my laundry.
One of the things I don't miss about our apartment... coin laundry in the basement.
Then she did my dishes.
She wouldn't take no for an answer.

She is a two time cancer survivor.
The first time was when her babies were babies and before I knew her.
She was given a slim chance to survive that time.
But she did.

Three years ago, she was diagnosed with AML.
She has been in remission for almost two years.
That is twice as long as she hoped.
Way longer than the doctors told her...

She having her bone marrow tested next week.
They are worried the AML is back.
I am hoping they are wrong again.
