This is what I have been working on. It will be a blanket... hopefully. Half of the fabric is neatly cut into squares. The rest is well on its way.
I had to do a Google search to figure out how in the word I was going to cut a 2 foot by 3 foot piece of fabric down to 6 inch squares. It sounded easy until I was confronted with a piece of fabric larger than my dining table. But hey - we are making progress.
The sewing - well that is another story. The pattern I have, and already decided to modify slightly, advises you to use a "walking foot" when sewing. (I am also 100% positive modifying a pattern is exactly what every beginner should do to ensure success, right?)
I do not have a clue what a walking foot is or looks like. My machine may have one... but again I am not familiar with my machine - or any machine for that matter. Aside from the straight stitch... I am pretty clueless. My sewing class is not until July... so hopefully Google will help me out with this one too.
