A Reminder

When I was five months pregnant, Michael and I went to NYC.
It was our first time in the city and we fell in love.

It was also my first vacation where I spent the whole trip thinking as a mommy.

Every new thing I saw, every little moment, thoughts of the little one would dominate.

I was still not showing much, and so no one could tell why I smiled at every stroller that went past...
or took 50 pictures of the Alice in Wonderland statues in Central Park.

My mind was already planning another visit...
a visit with three instead of just two.

Michael's thought were in that direction too.
We spent hours in FAO Schwarz browsing at things for a Deedle...
all of our souvenirs were things for a little one.

We talked and whispered about things we would do with Deedle when we returned.
Scoped out the playgrounds and kids days at the museums.

There would be moments were we were so excited one of us would stop and just grin.
Squeeze hands or touch the belly.

I still wasn't showing much, especially to anyone who didn't know me...
so I felt like I had this little secret that no one we passed of spoke to knew.

At MOMA, I found this little heart in a sea of paint on one of J. Pollock's works.
I felt like it was a secret heart like the little one I had.

And then I saw this Piccaso painting...
and the words "ma jolie"
my pretty.

Hands on my belly, starring at the words, getting teary eyed.
I felt at that very instant Deedle was a little girl.

The gender flip flopped in my head over the next few months...
but that moment was one where I was the most sure.

We told a lot of people that this was going to be our last trip as a couple...
but I think it was really our first trip as parents.

Thank you Marta for the reminder.

love this. we went to new york when i was about 5 months pregnant too! so crazy! i wasn't showing much either, but it was there that i noticed all the great strollers (like maclaren's) and imagined having to ride subways home from school with a kiddo (so thankful I won't have to be doing that. :) we still talk about going back. would you take eva too? i'm not sure if i'm brave enough. maybe one day.

honestly, i thought you were going to announce that you were pregnant! not sure why, but i did :)

We travelled quite a bit when I was pregnant too. I know what you mean by 'first trip as parents'. Love the little hidden heart :)
