Pass it on...

IMG_1438

I think about my mom a lot...
I guess that comes with being a mom now.

As a kid, you take your mom for granted...
and I think that most moms want it that way.

Being taken for granted means never letting them down.
They never question your presence.
Knowing you are always there.

You told me when I went back to work...
that you were proud of me.

You told me the same thing when I resigned...
and decided it was best for us to stay at home.

You made a comment about how you wished you could have stayed home.
Always been there for us...

The things is, mom, that you were...
always there.

You always worked...
always had too.
More than one job...
sometimes three.

But you were never too busy for us.
I don't know how you did it...
but you did.

I remember you rushing into the auditorium...
maybe a few minutes late...
maybe still in a uniform.
But you were there, smiling...
waving.

I remember hurried kisses as you brought a forgotten back pack...
or permission slip.
A little note for me would always be there.
"Have a great day, Love Mom"

Doing my homework at your work...
so you could help me if I needed it.
Watching you try to hurry and finish things up.
So we could all go home.

Looking forward to whole days with you.
When you had a day off - you made it count.
You always made it special.

I also remember times you weren't there...
couldn't be there.
Now I know that these days were way harder on you than me.

You always made sure someone was...
and made sure I knew where you would have rather been.

If you had had the choice... I knew.
I never questioned it.
You would have rather been with us.
I took it for granted.

Never worried about how...
because you always figured it out.

Never questioning the love.
Knowing that it is unconditional and forever.

I don't take you for granted anymore...
but I hope that I can pass it on to the monster.
I hope she can take me for granted too.

p.s. as in, "always get me" meaning, you always get me choked up when i read your posts. I re-read that and realized it didn't make sense. Sorry ;)

Wow Nessa! This is so good. I never thought of it that way. I do want my kids to take me for granted!
And, I took mine for granted, until I became a mother, too...

This is so, so beautiful. Mom my has mentioned the same... wishing she could have stayed home with us... wishing she made a greater effort to do so (etc etc). But the thing is, we never knew otherwise. I never once felt like she was less of a mom because she worked. I never felt like we missed out. She did an incredible job with the time she had, and that is what's important. I can imagine this post will make your mom's heart swell with gratitude and admiration for you. What a lovely gift you've given her. (And what a lovely gift she's obviously given you.) Also... this photo is just stunning. One for the wall (framed) indeed.

Nessa - this is tear welling-ly beautiful. A testimony not only to your mom's choices and dedication to motherhood, but to all mom's who work outside the home. I have no doubt that she is proud of you, my friend.
