First Harvest

IMG_3668

Our first little harvest.
These little tomatoes were quickly put on top of a salad for lunch.
I still can't believe we grew something edible.

I know it is probably taste bud bias...
but they were the best cherry tomatoes I have ever had.

It has been hot, really hot.
It is the, kind of hot that engulfs you.

The air is so humid and heavy...
it surrounds you like a thick blanket.
I broke out into a rolling sweat just taking the recycling to the curb.

Eva makes a mean face as soon as heat hits her.
She will play a bit, then all of the sudden gets mad.

She fusses and then wants held, then points to the house.
The back of her hair damp with sweat and curls.

Sheriah has been braving the heat.
Riding her bike and making new friends.

As the day stretches out, her bike rides get shorter and shorter.
Yesterday, she came in sweaty and red...
"I give up, it is too hot."

She opened the freezer to get a popsicle and stood there enjoying the blast of cool air.
I remember doing that... wishing I could climb in the freezer to cool off.

She was right back on her bike within the hour.
It was a temporary give-up.

Homegrown tomatoes are the best. I am growing little ones called "yellow chello" that are so sweet.

We have a garden every year - well, my husband does it all - and it all tastes WAY better than anything we buy at the grocery store!!! This year it didn't do as well as it usually does & I think it might be b/c it was so blasted HOT!

Hubs and I planted a garden for the first time last year and when we picked our first tomatoes, we felt the same way ... like proud "plant parents" so excited to have nurtured something so delish :)

JEALOUS. It's raining and cold here, so I'm wondering whether we'll end up with any tomatoes at all!

YAY! They look delicious! My senior mom had grand gardening plans for tomatos, but hasn't been feeling well enough to plant them, so she stuck with just the sunflowers and butterfly bush. She was so thrilled this week when a sweet neighbor brought over tomatos from their garden to share with her. Aren't gardens fun! :) Happy Sweet Shot Tuesday!

I think all give ups should be temporary.

I am unable to keep any plant alive (as I look at a flowerless orchid on my counter) let alone grow something edible. Much respect for you, my friend.
